Permanent Resident

To keep your permanent resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous. Some of your time abroad may count towards the 730 days. See what time abroad counts towards your permanent resident status.

• You must first apply to the province or territory where you want to live and be nominated, and.
• After a province or territory nominates you, you must apply to IRCC for permanent residence. An IRCC officer will then assess your application based on Canadian immigration rules.

Anyone is allowed to apply for permanent residency in Canada but only qualified individuals will be accepted. To find if you are eligible for permanent residency you will be examined by your: age. level of education.

Most permanent resident cards are valid for five years, though occasionally PR cards are only valid for one year. The Canadian government encourages permanent residents to keep track of their expiration date and apply to renew their Canadian permanent resident card within six months of their card expiring.

For permanent residency through Express Entry, a minimum language proficiency of CLB 7, or a minimum of 6.0 for each section of the IELTS test, is required.

A single applicant without a spouse or common-law partner and any dependent children must have a minimum of CAD $13, 213 in savings to qualify for permanent residency. A couple who are immigrating to Canada must have a combined sum of CAD $16, 449 in settlement funds.
